Heavy precipitation followed by a flash thaw of a snow pack on still-frozen soil caused catastrophic flooding in many areas of the Missouri River basin. Thousands of people lost homes, businesses, and agricultural properties. Roads, dams, bridges and other infrastructure has been destroyed or heavily damaged.
The flood risk may continue into May or beyond. The flooding illustrates the need for a more resilient river with greater flood plain connectivity. The League will continue advocating for recovery efforts that work with the river, not against it. We’ll support efforts that reduce flood risk while improving water quality, providing for self-sustaining populations of fish and wildlife, and increasing recreational opportunities.
You can read more about the causes and effects of this flooding, including statements from League staff, in the Des Moines Register.
