National Shooting Sports Month

The League often partners with government agencies, the shooting sports industry, and other conservation organizations to promote participation in shooting sports. This summer, we are partnering with the National Shooting Sports Foundation to offer a wide range of people opportunities to experience recreational shooting sports for the first time as part of National Shooting Sports Month.

Throughout the month of August, League chapters will open their facilities to novice and first-time shooters. Many events will provide equipment for participants to try out, introductory lessons on different types of shooting sports, and experienced instructors to help beginners learn to shoot safely and responsibly. Dragoon Trail Chapter

  • Ankeny Ikes Practical Shooters Weekly Match – Tuesdays August 4, 11, 18, and 25
    Weekly level 1 United States Practical Shooting Association club match. We will shoot three (sometimes four) stages with a total match round count between 100-150 rounds (if you do not miss). Setup begins at 4:15 p.m. with shooting starting as soon as stages are ready. Walk-ons will be accepted as long as there is room in the match. Registration required. 4857 NE 110th Ave, Elkhart, IA 50073.
  • Open Trap Shoot – Tuesdays August 4, 11, 18, and 25
    Open trap on our four trap fields. 5:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. 4857 NE 110th Ave, Elkhart, IA 50073. $4.50 for members, $5.50 for non-members.
  • 2020 Iowa Steel Challenge Championship – Saturday August 8 or Sunday August 9
    Level 2. Eight stages – 200 rounds. The match will be shot in a single-day format, either Saturday or Sunday. Competitors will complete four stages in the morning and four in the afternoon. Competitors will be limited to two division entries per day. Registration required. 5:00 p.m. 4857 NE 110th Ave, Elkhart, IA 50073.
  • 5-Stand – Saturday August 8
    Monthly 5-stand shoot. Participants shoot in turn at various combinations of clay birds thrown at different angles, speeds, heights and distances. 10:00 a.m. 4857 NE 110th Ave, Elkhart, IA 50073. $4.50 per round for members, $5.50 per round for non-members.

Linn County Chapter – First Shot – Saturday August 15

We will be offering supervised Air Gun, .22 rifle and Archery shooting at our ranges. We will also have an open house, with a presentation and release of monarch butterflies. We will supply eye and ear protection for all Air Gun and .22 rifle participants. 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 5401 42nd Street NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52411. Free.


Waterloo Chapter – Sporting Clays – Saturdays August 8 and 22

Sporting clays, skeet, and trap shooting. 9:00 a.m. 5519 East Washburn Road, Waterloo, IA 50701. $12 for 50 sporting clays targets. For more information, call Jeff at 319-240-9632.

Alexandria Chapter – Open House – Sunday August 2

Lynchburg Chapter – Open House – Saturday August 22
