Youth Convention

Summer will be here before you know it. And with summer comes the age-old refrain: “When are we going to do something fun?!” We have the answer: A week filled with fun and adventure at the Izaak Walton League’s Youth Convention.

Young Ikes will be exploring nature and searching for prehistoric shark teeth along the Potomac River. Looking for more thrills? Thursday we will head to Kings Dominion, the East Coast’s best amusement park, boasting 60 different rides! After a fun-filled 2 days we will head to nearby Spotsylvania to the Fredericksburg-Rappahannock Chapter for outdoor recreation and conservation activities!

Please note that a completed and signed health and liability form and parental consent form are required at onsite check-in on Tuesday, July 17.

Wednesday we will put on our naturalist hats at Calderon State Park. Bald Eagles have been known to inhabit the park and we will do our best to spot them! The shores of the park are rich with million-year-old sharks teeth, which we will attempt to find. After this nature exploration we will break for a picnic lunch at the park. Next we will head to Ferry Farm, the home of young George Washington and site where he chopped down the cherry tree! Then we’ll learn about Civil War history at the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.

Get ready for an adrenaline rush on one of the many rides at Kings Dominion. Intimidator 305 is a 305-foot tall beast, reaching speeds of 90 mph! Other notable rides include the Flight of Fear and Volcano: The Blast Coaster. Take a break from the rides and enjoy lunch and cool drinks. After lunch, defy gravity on Delirium, which sends 40 riders soaring up to 115 feet in the air while spinning. Or fall 275-foot on Drop Tower (second lunch not included!).
