Summer will be here before you know it. And with summer comes the age-old refrain: “When are we going to do something fun?!”
We have the answer: a week filled with adventure at the Izaak Walton League’s 2019 Youth Convention. Here are some of the activities our Iowa hosts have planned.
Wednesday, July 17
Discover America’s agricultural heritage at Living History Farms as we explore historically-authentic working farms plus a bustling Iowa town (circa 1850), where the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations will immerse you in history. Then it’s lunch (and a little downtime) at Fort Des Moines Park before we head to Blank Park Zoo– home to tigers, giraffes, penguins, and a new baby rhino – where we’ll talk about pollinators and what kids can do at home to help them.
Thursday, July 18
At the Des Moines Water Works
we'll take a tour to find out how river water gets clean enough to drink. Then it's back to the Des Moines Chapter house to help native pollinators by building mason bee boxes. Finally, the folks from SOAR: Saving Our Avian Resources
will bring a few raptor friends (the kind with feathers!) and talk about the importance of conserving habitat for these birds.
Friday, July 19
What happens when we throw things in the trash? A tour of East Park Metro Landfill
provides a behind-the-scenes look that we guarantee your kids won’t forget. (Don't worry, they'll be on a bus!) Next stop: Jester Park
to enjoy an outdoor lunch, a round of stream monitoring, and fun in the park. One of the park's most popular attractions is the bison and elk exhibit
, and we'll get a guided tour to learn about these majestic animals, which used to be found across Iowa. Friday night it's mini-golf
to finish up the week!
