Healthy streams are vital to healthy communities. It's where our kids play and dogs splash. And some of these streams provide the water we drink. But is the water in these streams clean and safe? The truth is, for most local streams, no one knows. That’s a problem – one the Izaak Walton League can help you solve with the Clean Water Challenge.
Our goal is to monitor water quality at 100,000 more stream sites nationwide by 2022 and improve water quality across the country.
Can we count on your help? There are lots of ways you can get involved, from taking a photo to taking a snapshot of stream health!
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So is your Stream Selfie! You can help us create an inventory of stream sites – and focus stream monitoring where it’s needed most. And we'll feature the best Stream Selfie each week on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more! START SNAPPING
Step 2: GET YOUR FEET WET & CLEAN UP A STREAM
Clean-ups are about more than making communities look good. When trash accumulates in streams and rivers, it damages fish habitat, blocks out sunlight vital to underwater plants, and depletes oxygen in the water (which all aquatic animals need to survive). LEARN MORE
Step 3: VOLUNTEER AS A STREAM MONITOR
You don’t need a background in science or expensive equipment to be a volunteer stream monitor. With simple tools plus targeted training from the League, you can start testing water quality in your community today! Here’s how:
- Visit our Save Our Streams web page for stream monitoring video tutorials, equipment lists, and tips for beginning stream monitors.
- Attend a hands-on workshop where League staff will teach you how to monitor water quality. Visit our Clean Water Workshops page for information on upcoming workshops or put in a request for training.
- Enter your stream monitoring data into the Save Our Streams national database to create a stream health report card and share your data with others.
- Share solutions to local pollution problems you discovered through stream monitoring. Your successes will encourage new stream monitors. E-mail email@example.com.
Step 4: MAKE A DONATION
