Minnesota  >> The Minnesota Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation recognized Jim and Merlene Stiles as “Heroes in the Making” this April as part of the foundation’s Think Green Month, which focused on organizations and individuals helping preserve and improve the environment. They were nominated for the award by the Minnesota Environmental Partnership.

Jim Stiles is president of the League’s Austin Chapter, which is involved with a range of water quality projects, including a 1.5-acre rain garden to improve water quality in Mill Pond, water quality monitoring of the Cedar River, shoreland restoration, and educational programs for high school and middle school students. Merlene Stiles is the Austin Chapter’s conservation issues chairperson and is also active with several other Minnesota conservation organizations. “We volunteer because we love it, but to be recognized is just amazing,” Merlene said. Timberwolves team president Chris Wright surprised Jim and Merlene with an autographed team print during a basketball game.

“Everybody enjoys Minnesota’s outdoors,” says Jim. “People want to live here and vacation here because we value our lakes and outdoor areas.” Jim and Merlene Stiles are helping conserve these resources for the enjoyment of all.

The Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation provides and supports hands-on programs that positively impact Minnesota youth.
