The League’s Lincoln Chapter co-sponsored “Embrace the Earth” events April 21-22 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The events featured Amy and Dave Freeman, adventurers from Minnesota whose travels have taken them from the Amazon to the Arctic. The Freemans were named National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year in 2014. Amy and Dave conduct water quality studies on all of their trips and connect with school kids via the Internet to teach them about water quality and the outdoors. The Freemans recently spent an entire year in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness – a trip that covered over 2,000 miles by canoe, ski, and dog sled – to raise awareness of current threats to the health of the Boundary Waters
(an area the Izaak Walton League has long defended).
The Freemans gave presentations about their travels and what they are observing in nature. They expressed serious concerns about the amount of plastics they have been finding in their water samples, regardless of where the samples were gathered. Plastic particles have been found in fish and wildlife across the globe.
