July 14 to July 17, 2015

South Dakota: Great Faces. Great Places.
(and we don't just mean these four faces carved into Mt. Rushmore!)

Whether you are a new member or have been part of the League for decades, attending the national convention is your best opportunity to meet Ikes from around the country and take part in the League's democratic process. You don't have to be an official delegate to attend the convention. It's open to EVERY League member.

In 2015, we return to Pierre, South Dakota, which is located on the Missouri River, close to several national grasslands and the Black Hills. The South Dakota Ikes are planning plenty of outdoor fun for your visit, including a fishing trip (Sunday, July 12, see below) and possible tours of Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Need more reasons to travel to South Dakota?
  • State Capitol: This beautiful building features a copper dome, Corinthian columns, rusticated walls of granite and Bedford limestone, and a decorative interior. Get more details on the National Park Service Web site. (Legend has it that each craftsman was given one bright blue tile to place as a signature stone. Can you find them all?!)
  • Cultural Heritage Center: Artifacts from the old west, including a full-size tipi inside. It’s built into a bluff behind the state capitol, so it will be nice and cool in July!
  • Turtle Effigy: Like a good mystery? No one knows who made this turtle-shaped rock formation – or why!
  • Mount Rushmore: This majestic tribute to U.S. Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt was completed in 1936 and is just a few hours away from Pierre.
  • Missouri National Recreational River: Follow the trail of Lewis and Clark as you paddle along America’s longest river.
  • Badlands National Park: Don’t let the name scare you away! You can have a good time in the Badlands. The pinnacles and ravines of this wild place include one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Enjoy a drive or hike off the beaten path.
CONVENTION EVENTS
In addition to official League business, from policy discussions to keynote speakers, other convention events include:
  • Small-group workshops where you can interact with speakers and gain practical skills on a variety of topics
  • A National Awards Luncheon to honor League members who made outstanding conservation contributions
  • The Parade of States, where chapters and divisions share the best food and drinks their states have to offer
  • An Awards Breakfast that recognizes membership recruiters and top chapter achievements
  • A dinner banquet Friday night to conclude the convention in style
DON'T MISS THE BOAT!
Join members of the League's Sunshine Chapter for a day of pre-convention fishing on Sunday, July 12 (8am to 4pm). The most popular (and plentiful) fish in this section of the Missouri River is walleye, but you'll also find smallmouth bass, Chinook salmon, and Northern pike. Visit the Fishing in South Dakota Web site for more information.

The per-person price of $140 includes the trip plus your rod & reel and bait. Each angler must have a South Dakota Fishing license (you can get a one-day non-resident license for $18). Visit the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Web site to purchase a fishing license online and for more details on types of available licenses. There is a limit of three anglers per boat, and South Dakota fishing regulations will apply. For more information, e-mail John Henderson.
