Fish Kill Advisory Network
The Izaak Walton League's Fish Kill Advisory Network (FKAN) maintains the only central fish kill and manure spill database for the Upper Mississippi River Basin states - Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. All records are verified by state agencies, and cover the 1980s to the present.
Through Geographical Information System mapping technologies, we are able to provide a visual depiction of our data. Click here to view a map of the affected regions. Click here to read more about our use of GIS technology.
Fish kills are not the only consequence of water pollution, but they are an important indicator of water quality and ecosystem health. Some causes of fish kills include agriculture runoff, transportation-related accidents, and even natural processes. Fish kill data will help educate the public on water quality problems and the threat they pose to our environment, health and natural resources.
The FKAN works to increase the reporting and investigation of fish kills, strengthen state enforcement efforts, and encourage water quality improvements. Staff at the Midwest office in St. Paul, Minnesota coordinate the program, and they are happy to answer any questions.Click Here to email us.
