Izaak Walton League Joins 2010 National Hunting and Fishing Day Sponsors (9/17/10)

One of the nation's oldest and most respected conservation organizations, the Izaak Walton League of America, is an official sponsor of this year's National Hunting and Fishing (NHF) Day.

NHF Day, set for Sept. 25, 2010, was formalized by Congress in 1972 as an annual public reminder that conservation depends on leadership and funding from hunters and anglers.

"The Izaak Walton League was formed in 1922 by sportsmen concerned about protecting our country's natural heritage and improving outdoor recreation opportunities. This organization was among the first to champion conservation -- it literally helped shape the ethos that Congress later honored with National Hunting and Fishing Day," said Denise Wagner of Wonders of Wildlife, the Springfield, Mo., official home of NHF Day.

Sponsorship from the Izaak Walton League will help Wonders of Wildlife deliver the NHF Day message year-round. The museum's education and awareness campaigns help build public understanding and appreciation for hunting, angling and natural resource conservation.

"Our natural resources are threatened on many fronts -- everything from power plant emissions to destruction of native prairies and wetlands," said Jim Madsen, Izaak Walton League national president. "Hunters and anglers are often the first to identify these problems and take an active role in addressing them. The Izaak Walton League is working to protect outdoor America for future generations."

Madsen noted that the Izaak Walton League co-chaired the first National Hunting and Fishing Day steering committee.

Hunters, anglers and sport shooters remain the largest contributors to conservation funding. Hunting and fishing licenses, together with excise taxes on firearms, ammunition, bows, arrows, rods and reels, together generate $100,000 every 30 minutes -- totaling more than $1.75 billion per year--for the conservation of fish, wildlife and habitat.

The entire USA Shooting Team is serving as honorary chair for NHF Day 2010. With 103 Olympic medals for rifle, pistol and shotgun marksmanship, the U.S. excels in few sports more than shooting. Only track and field, swimming, diving, wrestling and boxing have been more prolific medal producers for Americans. In fact, shooting ranks ahead of gymnastics, figure skating, volleyball and more than 30 other Olympic sports. Most members of the current USA Shooting Team are active hunters and anglers, blending a passion for the outdoors with winning on the world stage.

Sponsors for NHF Day 2010 include Wonders of Wildlife, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Bass Pro Shops, Smith & Wesson, Sportsman Channel, Realtree, Cabela's, GunBroker.com, Yamaha, Pope and Young Club, Izaak Walton League of America and Academy Sports + Outdoors.
