Environmental Stewardship
In 2003, EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman (5th from right) joined League members, staff, and representatives of the National Association of Shooting Ranges at the Arlington-Fairfax Chapter (Va.) to sign a memorandum of understanding promoting environmental stewardship at League ranges.
Izaak Walton League members take their responsibilities as stewards of the environment seriously. In 2003, the League entered into an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Association of Shooting Ranges (NASR) to promote the idea of environmental stewardship at all of our chapters with shooting ranges.
Chapters are encouraged to develop environmental stewardship plans for their ranges that outline the procedures for managing lead from spent ammunition. These plans are then sent to the NASR and the U.S. EPA for review and, upon approval of the plan, a certificate is awarded to the chapter from the EPA. The NASR has made the stewardship plan process an easy task with the recent introduction of computer software that will take you through the procedure step-by-step.
