For agricultural policy to best serve America’s needs in the 21st century, the 2012 Farm Bill must re-establish the connection between federal crop insurance premium subsidies and basic conservation compliance provisions aimed at protecting wetlands and reducing soil erosion.

The Farm Bill affects more U.S. land than any other piece of federal legislation in place today. For agricultural policy to best serve America’s needs in the 21st century, the 2012 Farm Bill must maintain the unique functions of current Farm Bill conservation programs, establish continuing mandatory budget baselines for core conservation functions, and oppose funding cuts for mandatory conservation programs in annual appropriations bills.

Sodsaver: Cost-Effective Conservation (June 2012)
The Farm Bill affects more U.S. land than any other piece of federal legislation in place today. For agricultural policy to best serve America’s needs in the 21st century, the 2012 Farm Bill must enact a nationwide Sodsaver provision to prohibit federal farm program and crop insurance premium subsidies for native land converted to production if that land does not have a prior cropping history.
