Youth Have a Field Day
In June 2010, the
Oil City Chapter
(Pennsylvania) hosted the annual
Venango County Youth Field Day. Almost 200
children ages 8-18 participated in 10 outdoor
events, including shooting .22 and black powder
rifles and shotguns, archery, fly tying,
fishing, canoeing, and wild turkey mock
hunting. A fun run included stations where
youth threw tomahawks, knives, and spears;
identified pelts; and overcame physical
obstacles.
Oil City Chapter members provided qualified instructors and one-on-one coaching and support for all events. Each child received a t-shirt, baseball cap, food, drinks, and prizes. Costs were supported by a wide range of local businesses and organizations. This is the 12th straight year the chapter hosted the event, and chapter member Bill Lynam has chaired it for nine of those years, coordinating event schedules so youth can participate equally in all the events.
