Earth Day 2010
Ikes
across the country celebrated the 40th
anniversary of Earth Day in April. The
Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chapter’s Earth Day
celebration included chapter members, community
guests, and distinguished representatives from
local government.
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and County Council President Nancy Floreen were both in attendance. Chapter President Pat Tarquinio offered opening remarks and assisted Ms. Floreen with the opening ribbon cutting. Events included interactive demonstrations with chapter bee keeper Robert Mackleer, an hands-on look at the chapter’s innovative solar-powered lake aerator with Conservation Committee Chair Steve Swartz, bird identification and banding with Jim Tate from the Smithsonian, plus Woodsy the Owl and a Leave No Trace Camping exhibit by the Boy Scouts of America.
“A lighter than expected turn out of guests and a strong turn out of our membership provided for a relaxed and enjoyable time,” says chapter First Vice President Ernie Smith. “The relaxed atmosphere allowed our new chapter members an opportunity to see and enjoy the farm for their very first time.”
