Dr. Ken Steimel, a long-time member of the Izaak Walton League’s Floyd County Chapter in Iowa, was passionate about wildlife conservation and aviation. When he passed away last year, Steimel’s family made a donation to the Floyd County Chapter in his honor. League members felt the best way to remember Steimel was to commemorate his two loves by establishing a wildflower prairie in Steimel’s name at the local airport.
With the cooperation of the county conservation board and the aviation authority, Floyd County Chapter members planted two acres of native prairie at the Northeast Iowa Regional Airport in Charles City, Iowa. After several summer months during which the prairie flourished, the Ikes held a dedication ceremony and erected a commemorative sign constructed by chapter members. As wildflowers bloom for generations to come, Steimel will be honored.
